Yale University Library News, Events and Exhibits: New Library Search New Library Search

Yale University Library has created a new and improved search, which combines seven powerful search utilities in one convenient location. Enter a search term once, and results from several Yale resources and the Internet will be grouped under a set of tabs for you to explore. The new search is available at the top left of the Library's home page.

Material from these resources are incorporated in the new search:

  • Orbis: search Yale University Library holdings (printed books and journals, Internet resources, and archival finding aids);
  • Yale Library Web pages: powered by Google, searches any library web pages;
  • Images: find thousands of images from many Yale libraries and collections,see a thumbnail and more information about subgroups of images found by your search;
  • E-journals: search for journals available in digital format, such as JSTOR;
  • Databases: find research databases, e.g. Academic Search;
  • Google Scholar: search the fulltext of 10,000 recent journal articles and find information about who cites these articles. Fulltext is available through Fulltext or Yale Links;
  • Library People: find contact information for library employees and departments.
In the near future the library will introduce more functionality, such as the ability to tag and store your favorite results.

Background: The core development, design and coding of the new search was done by Mike Friscia of Web, Workstation & Digital Consulting Services. Content is provided to the search from a variety of sources was with collaborative partners across the University including Pat Lynch and Carmine Granucci from the ITS Web Group who provided assistance in the implementation of the Google Search Appliance, Roy Lechich and Karen Kupiec for the extract from Metalib (Databases), Yue Ji for the extract from SFX (E-journals), and George Ouellette and Mike Friscia for the extract from the Library's image collections. Thanks also to Hongbin Liu for providing input on features of an advanced search and Katie Bauer and the Library's Public Interface Committee for overall management of the implementation of this effort.
