Now available online: Century of Science from the Web of Science
Web of Science now indexes scientific literature back to 1900 through its Century of Science product, purchased by the Yale University Library. Use it to find articles by such 20th century science pioneers as Albert Einstein and Marie Curie, and trace who cites them up to the present day. To see an example, search in WOS for "The relation between the expansion and the mean density of the universe." Not only is the citation in WOS, but you can also access the full text of the article online (look for the Yale Links button).
WOS also covers journals from the humanities back to 1975 and social sciences back to 1956. For any article in WOS, you can access both a list of its cited references and all the other articles in WOS that cite this article. Do a topic search in WOS and then find influential articles in that area by sorting the list by "Times Cited." This will show you which articles on a topic are cited the most by other researchers.
To get more out of WOS you may register for a personalized account. With your account you can create e-mail alerts that let you know when articles on a particular subject or by an author are published. You can also save searches and later edit or rerun them. These types of services are a good way to keep up with and manage the large amounts of information being published today.
